- Extracellular sucrose is hydrolyzed to monosaccharides by cell wall acid invertase and subsequently absorbed as monosaccharides by the monosaccharide transporters ZmSTP3 and Zmsweet31/4C.
- ZmSWEET3a likely exporting sucrose but enhanced the expression of most transporter genes for uptake of apoplasmic sugars.
- The expression of ZmSUT1 in the BETL suggests that sucrose uptake may occur in parallel with hexose import facilitated by ZmSTPs and ZmSWEET3a/4c, thereby contributing further to sugar transport in the maize grain.
