Functional Descriptions:

• The sucrose transporter ZmSWEET11/13b transponds sucrose from PC to the extravasal space at the mother-offspring junction, and BETL then absorbs the sugar from the extravasal space through two pathways.
• Sucrose absorption is driven by sucrose transporters ZmSUT1 and ZmSWEET11/13a
• ZmSTP3, ZmSWEET3a/4c (monosaccharide transporters), ZmSUT1, and ZmSWEET11/13a (sucrose transporters) in the basal endosperm transfer cells for retrieval of apoplasmic sucrose or hexoses after hydrolysis by extracellular invertase.
• ZmSUT1 mutant plants are deficient in leaf sucrose unloading to pholem; mature leaves hyperaccumulate carbohydrates and display leaf chlorosis with premature senescence.
• To address this question, we recently provided genetic evidence that ZmSUT1 from maize (Zea mays) is required for efficient phloem loading. sut1-m1 mutant plants hyperaccumulate carbohydrates in leaves, are defective in loading sucrose into the phloem, and have altered biomass partitioning.
• Presumably due to the hyperaccumulation of soluble sugars in leaves, mutations in ZmSUT1 lead to downregulation of chlorophyll accumulation, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance.
• Maize SUT1 functions in phloem loading.
• ZmSUT1 from maize (Zea mays) is required for efficient phloem loading.
• ZmSUT1 functions to phloem load sucrose in maize leaves.
• The high sucrose concentration in the phloem appeared disadvantageous for the ZmSUT1, preventing sucrose recovery from the apoplastic space in the fungus/plant interface.
