  • Extracellular sucrose is hydrolyzed to monosaccharides by cell wall acid invertase and subsequently absorbed as monosaccharides by the monosaccharide transporters ZmSTP3 and Zmsweet31/4C.
  • ZmSTP3 likely exporting sucrose but enhanced the expression of most transporter genes for uptake of apoplasmic sugars.
  • The presence of ZmSWEET11 and 13b (Clade III) in the maternal tissue (facilitating sucrose efflux to the apoplasm) and ZmSTP3 and ZmSWEET4c (Clade II) in the BETL (for the uptake of hexoses) indicated that sucrose is likely degraded at the maternal–filial interface.
