- Only one candidate gene, Zm00001d028317, encoding a CLAVATA1 (CLV1)/BARELY ANY MERISTEM (BAM)-related receptor kinase-like protein, which localized on the plasma membrane, was identified in this region. Based on the phylogeny, we named it ZmBAM1d.
- We also demonstrate the utility of this new genome by using it to clone the first maize kernel weight QTL, ZmBAM1d, which was targeted for selection during maize improvement.
- ZmBAM1d regulates seed development through pathways affecting determinacy and carbohydrate metabolism.
- ZmBAM1d positively regulates corn kernel weight, and overexpression and knockout of this gene had no effect on other agronomic traits.
