Functional Descriptions:

• Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genomes (TILLING), we demonstrate that Ht2/Ht3 is an allele of the wall-associated receptor-like kinase gene ZmWAK-RLK1|ZmPSTOL8.05_1.
• These results demonstrate that Ht2/Ht3 encodes a functional resistance allele of ZmWAK-RLK1|ZmPSTOL8.05_1, which differs from Htn1 with respect to the resistance spectrum.
• The ZmWAK-RLK1|ZmPSTOL8.05_1 variants encoded by Htn1 and Ht2/Ht3 differ by multiple amino acid polymorphisms that particularly affect the putative extracellular domain. A diversity analysis in maize revealed the presence of dozens of ZmWAK-RLK1|ZmPSTOL8.05_1 alleles.
• The finding that ZmPSTOL genes were preferentially expressed in the roots of the lines that contributed the allelic enhancing root traits, seedling dry weight and P content indicate that at least ZmPSTOL3.06, ZmPSTOL4.05, ZmPSTOL8.02 and ZmWAK-RLK1|ZmPSTOL8.05_1 may have a functional relationship with root morphology and/or with P acquisition in maize.
