Functional Descriptions:
- Two O2-activated genes, bZIP17 and NAKED ENDOSPERM2 (NKD2), encode transcription factors, which can in turn coactivate other O2 network genes with O2.
- bZIP17 can form a heterodimer with O2 to jointly regulate the downstream regulatory genes of O2. Another target gene, NKD2, acts as a coactivator and is involved in regulating gene expression of O2-mediated endosperm cell differentiation.
- NKD2 (with its paralog NKD1) was previously shown to be involved in regulation of aleurone development
- These results indicate that NKD2 can act both as a coactivator and as a downstream effector of O2 in regulation of both its direct and indirect target genes.
- Double mutants have multiple (2-5) layers of peripheral endosperm cells that lack starch granules or other features of starchy endosperm.
