• LLS1 was found to be induced by both biotic and abiotic stresses. Transcriptomics analysis showed that genes involved in defense responses and secondary metabolite biosynthesis were mildly activated in leaves of the les30 mutant without lesions.
• Mutation of ACCELERATED CELL DEATH 1 (ACD1) in Arabidopsis and LETHAL LEAF SPOT1 (LLS1) in maize, which both encode pheophorbide a oxidase (PAO) that converts pheophorbide a to red chlorophyll catabolites, leads to lesion-mimic phenotypes.
• LLS1 is known to encode a critical enzyme for chlorophyll degradation.
• Perturbation of the biosynthesis of JA, SA, and their derivatives is probably responsible for the MDR conferred by the LLS1/les30 mutation.
