Functional Descriptions:

• The maize ARF8 and arf37 genes are orthologues of Arabidopsis MP/ARF5 (MONOPTEROS/ARF5), which controls the differentiation of vascular cells.
• Transcription of both ARF8 and arf37 was almost completely repressed in the mutant rum1.
• Expression of ARF8 and arf37 was induced within 2h of αNAA exposure but returned to control levels 3h after auxin treatment. The transcription of nac1 was not affected by αNAA exposure.
• The authors argue that regulation of the ARF transcription factors may be involved in vascular development, since rum1 showed a strong lack of organization of xylem elements and pith cells in primary roots.
