  • Two closely linked tomato HKT (SlHKT1;1 and SlHKT1;2) coding genes are positional candidates for the major tomato QTL involved in Na+/K+ homeostasis.
  • SlHKT1;1 and SlHKT1;2 are two tomato Na+-selective class I-HKT transporters.
  • SlHKT1;1 and/or SlHKT1;2 genes could underlie a major tomato QTL for Na+/K+ homeostasis as indicated by candidate gene analysis in RIL populations and expression analysis in tomato NILs.
  • Silencing of SlHKT1;1 and SlHKT1;2 genes in both NILs is being carried out to show that these genes are responsible for the major QTL involved in Na+ and K+ homeostasis in tomato.
