- In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), drought and salt stress stimulate nitric oxide (NO) production, which boosts proline synthesis by activating Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (SlP5CS) and Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase (SlP5CR) genes and the P5CR enzyme.
- Our research highlights NO’s crucial roles in activating SlP5CS1/2 and SlP5CR transcripts and enhancing SlP5CR’s S-nitrosylation at Cys-5.
- While direct evidence linking NO activation to SlP5CS1/2 or SlP5CR transcripts is lacking, it is proposed that S-nitrosylation of transcription factors could be a vital NO signaling mechanism for gene expression regulation.
- We hypothesize the existence of S-nitrosylated transcription factors involved in NO-mediated activation of SlP5CS1/2 and SlP5CR. We have established that SlP5CR undergoes S-nitrosylation at Cys-5, enhancing its enzymatic activity.
