Functional Descriptions:

• ChIP-PCR analysis revealed that MdWRKY31 binds to the promoter of MdLAC7 and positively regulates its activity to promote peel browning of bagged fruits (dark conditions).
• Interestingly, upon light exposure, the light-responsive transcription factor MdHY5 (ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5) bound to the promoter of MdWRKY31 and inhibited the gene’s expression, thereby indirectly inhibiting the function of MdLAC7.
• Under the light, MdHY5 interacted with MdWRKY31 and inhibited its expression, inhibiting MdWRKY31-MdLAC7 interaction and browning.
• The integrated analysis of the 9-quadrant diagram and the O2PLS model indicated a positive correlation between MdWRKY31 and MdLAC7 expression patterns (r as high as 0.977), suggesting that MdWRKY31 may regulate MdLAC7 expression to promote peel browning.
