  • The RNAi-mediated downregulation of HvHK1 disrupts ETC differentiation, impairs endosperm development and reduces grain weight.
  • Demonstrate that HvHK1 functions as a central regulator of ETC specification in the young barley endosperm by orchestrating cytokinesis, cell polarity and wall formation in the syncytial domain at the maternal–filial conjunction of grains.
  • Repression of HvHK1 impairs cell specification in the central ETC region and the development of transfer cell morphology, and consecutively defects differentiation of adjacent endosperm tissues.
