  • The HvGA20ox2|sdw1.a allele from Jotun resulted from a total deletion of the HvGA20ox2|sdw1 gene.
  • The results provided further proof that the gibberellin 20-oxidase gene (HvGA20ox2|sdw1) is the functional gene of the barley HvGA20ox2|sdw1 mutants.
  • Partial or total loss of function of the HvGA20ox2|sdw1 gene could be compensated by enhanced expression of its homolog HvGA20ox1 and HvGA20ox3.
  • The 7-bp deletion in HvGA20ox2|sdw1 gene reduced plant height by approximately 13 cm and delayed flowering time by 3–5 days in the barley segregating DHLs population independently on environmental cue.
  • The results provide further support for GA20 oxidase 2 (HvGA20ox2|sdw1) as the functional gene for the HvGA20ox2|sdw1 locus. We also observed that 52 barley varieties/lines displayed the short stature without the HvGA20ox2|sdw1.a, HvGA20ox2|sdw1.c and HvGA20ox2|sdw1.d alleles in this population.
